What is Nishaad?

In both Hindustani and Carnatic music, there are seven svaras, and Nishaad is the seventh svara. The extended form of नी syllable, is Nishaad. 'Ni' is how Nishaad is pronounced to make it easier to sing the syllable (notation - N). The Devanagri script also refers to it as निषाद. Nishaad is considered to be an important note in many ragas. In Western music, the seventh note of the octave is typically referred to as the "leading tone" or the "subtonic."
